Fear of technology has been present among us for as long as the technology itself. It undoubtedly changes our lives, but how – for better or worse?

To accept these changes in the most optimistic spirit, the Zasavje AEC invited members of the Association of Diabetics and Pensioners Association from Zagorje ob Savi to participate in the study circle Let Modern Technology Make Life Easier with mentor Mojca Kropivc. Participants had to face modern technology and overcome their fear of it. They certainly did well. Ignorance and fear of the ‘unknown’ disappeared in a blink of an eye right after the first meetings. They overcame obstacles one after another and soon became skilled at using a variety of tools and applications. A written or unwritten rule that says “Practice makes perfect” turned out to be very accurate. They diligently used all the information they gained at the meetings in their daily tasks. They learned about the basics of the computer and its accessories and got to know Microsoft Office programmes. They created Word documents and stored them on USB keys. They realised that you could drink coffee and have a pleasant chat with friends and relatives through various applications such as MS Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc. The smartphone was not a big deal either, and the multiple apps they downloaded come in handy today.

Instead of collecting dust, the smartwatches got a new place on the hands of their owners, who diligently count steps, measure heart rate, and are up to date with notices that they can now read on their watch. They also showed a lot of interest in using the Internet and websites, and they realised that “uncle” Google really knows a lot. They learned about the safe use of the Internet and its pitfalls. Among other things, they got acquainted with eAppointment and acquired digital certificates for access to portals (zVem, e-Zdravje etc.). In the end, they received certificates, celebrated and stepped into the world of modern technology with the knowledge they gained. Good luck, and may there be no fear on your way!
