The modern world demands constant adaptation and learning as technology evolves at lightning speed, and jobs require far more than just basic skills. At Jesenice AEC, we are implementing the project Key Competences – A Path to Success. Through this initiative, we aim to equip individuals with the knowledge and competencies essential for a successful life and career. We pay particular attention to employees over the age of 55 with lower levels of education, as well as foreigners who wish to improve their language skills and better integrate into Slovenian society.
Main goal: Enhancing basic skills
Learning a foreign language opens doors to the world and the local environment. For non-native speakers, these skills are essential for everyday communication and a stronger connection with the local environment. We also offer digital literacy programmes, where participants learn the basics of the digital world – from using email to creating spreadsheets. For many, this is their first encounter with such skills, and they soon realise how much easier these competencies make both their work and daily life.
The most inspiring aspect of our project is the stories of participants who discover something new and valuable. One such story is that of Mary Caroline from Venezuela, who joined our Slovenian in Practice for Hospitality programme. When she arrived in Slovenia, she faced a significant challenge: working as a hotel waitress but struggling to communicate with guests. After just a few weeks in the programme, she enthusiastically shared how she had successfully taken an order in Slovenian for the first time – without any help from her colleagues.
The feeling was incredible, as if I had opened new doors to my future!
Most participants in this programme came from South America, and all of them were extremely satisfied. They particularly praised the use of interactive methods such as real-life situation simulations, role-playing, and group problem-solving for practical tasks. They also highlighted the dynamic discussions, visual aids and the opportunity to apply new vocabulary immediately in the hospitality context. The participants were especially impressed with the programme teacher, Kaja, whose dedication and bilingual approach made it easier for them to adapt and acquire new skills.
The experience with the participants was gratifying, as they were eager to engage and deepen their knowledge of the Slovenian language to communicate more effectively in daily life. Their satisfaction during the learning process was crucial, as it further motivated them to embrace the language.
All participants gained invaluable experience and strengthened their confidence, which will undoubtedly support them in their daily work and life in Slovenia.
Participants in the programmes offered as part of the Key Competences – A Path to Success project have highlighted numerous benefits that have supported their personal and professional development. They particularly appreciated the flexibility of the programmes, which allowed them to balance learning with daily responsibilities, as well as the expert guidance of teachers who supported them every step of the way.
In addition to acquiring key competences and practical knowledge, participants have also improved their confidence and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment. They valued the relaxed and encouraging learning atmosphere, where they could develop their skills without fear of making mistakes. The practical focus of the programmes enabled them to apply their newly gained knowledge immediately in both everyday and work situations, making them more competitive in the job market and more self-assured in their personal lives.
