On 26 March, we organised the inspiring event 65+ So What! You Can Be Part of It in Trbovlje. The event was prepared by the Zasavje AEC within the framework of the nationwide Lahko.si campaign under the auspices of the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education (SIAE). As the title itself suggests, the programme was designed for older adults. The full-day event demonstrated that learning in later life remains a pathway towards greater independence, inclusion and quality of life.
The day began with an informal breakfast gathering, allowing participants to connect, get to know one another and create a pleasant, inclusive atmosphere. The morning workshops were designed to be practical and directly applicable, with a clear emphasis on how new knowledge can support everyday life.
Participants had the opportunity to refresh their knowledge of road traffic regulations, take part in a paper filigree workshop while learning about the life of Alma Karlin, engage in physical exercise led by a kinesiologist, explore artificial intelligence or enjoy a calming relaxation session accompanied by the sounds of gongs. The programme encouraged both physical and mental activity while fostering curiosity and self-confidence.
Particular attention was devoted to reading literacy. Alongside refreshments, participants were invited to browse books, read selected passages and take a chosen book home as a literary treat and inspiration for further reading, reflection and learning.
The afternoon programme brought lively activity to the information stands, where numerous organisations and associations presented their work. Across six thematic corners, visitors were able to access information in one place about health, support services, education, technology use and opportunities for involvement in the local community. The Hospic Café discussion on the important topic of long-term care attracted considerable interest.
The highlight of the day followed in the evening at the theatre hall of Delavski dom Trbovlje. Nik Škrlec presented the performance Healthy Mind, which opened the topic of memory, learning and mental fitness in a humorous and interactive way. The performance was followed by an engaging discussion with guests Štefanija L. Zlobec, Samo Fakin, Katra Hribar Frol and Marko Planinc. Each offered their own perspective on the importance of active, healthy and inclusive ageing.
The event was enriched by intergenerational cultural performances by the Zasavje AEC Choir Moj zborček and the children’s choir of Tončka Čeč Primary School Trbovlje, whose energy highlighted the value of intergenerational connection.
Approximately 250 participants attended the event, including many who would not usually take part in similar activities. Despite challenging weather conditions, the response was extremely positive, with participants particularly highlighting the practical value of the programme, the welcoming atmosphere and the feeling of acceptance.
On the very evening of the event, we received a message in our inbox from one participant that perhaps best captured the spirit of the day: “Today was one of the most beautiful days I have had.”
The event 65+ So What! You Can Be Part of It, confirmed that accessible, practical and inclusive content can successfully encourage older adults towards learning, connection and active living – and that it is never too late for new beginnings.
